Aviva has launched a virtual health service app for its group income protection customers as part of its drive to become a truly digital insurer.

Aviva is able to introduce the technology after announcing a partnership in January with babylon, a UK-based mobile health company.
This move saw a virtual health service being introduced to some of Aviva’s UK key corporate healthcare clients, which is now being extended to Aviva’s group income protection customers.

Through the babylon app, Aviva has said all new and existing group income protection customers going through a claim will have quick and convenient access to family GPs, specialist consultants, and state of the art health monitoring and treatment.

Free to download, the app also features a symptom checker that checks health and fitness vitals to help customers monitor and improve their health.

Steve Bridger, director of group risk, UK Health at Aviva, said: "The partnership with babylon illustrates Aviva’s commitment to becoming a truly digital insurer, using the latest technology and digital innovation to improve our customers’ access to primary healthcare and ultimately their overall health.

"Customers have told us that they increasingly want to do business with us digitally, so this app is designed to fit in with their lifestyles and make it as easy and comfortable as possible for them to get extra help from a GP whenever they are feeling unwell."

Commenting on technology developments in the private medical insurance (PMI) market, Ally Antell, Aviva’s head of client management and propositions, UK Health, told Life Insurance International that a major addition to its proposition is the MyHealthClaim app, which was launched in December 2014.

Antell said: "This gives every Aviva PMI customer in the UK immediate access to hospital and consultant information via their smart phone.

"We also envisage individuals using the app with their GP to select [the] right hospital and consultant, which makes their claims journey smoother when they contact Aviva to confirm treatment."

Antell added that Aviva continues to see "excellent take up and usage" of MyHealthCounts, an online health assessment tool that gives individuals a rating of their current level of health, and a tailored programme of expert advice and guidance to improve their health.
