Aviva has announced that head of UK insurance business, Andy Briggs, has decided to step down from his position.

The move comes barely weeks after Maurice Tulloch has been named as the group’s new CEO.

Briggs will remain with the group until 23 October 2019 to support an orderly transition, Aviva said in its press communique.

The statement added that Tulloch will lead a review of the UK businesses “to ensure the appropriate management structure to build on that success for the future”.

Briggs has been working with Aviva since 2015 after the company took over Friends Life, where he served as group CEO.

The company added that Briggs will be awarded ‘good leaver’ status that will make him eligible for pro-rated bonus for the current financial year.

Aviva has named its current group chief risk officer Angela Darlington as the interim CEO of its UK insurance business.

Darlington, who joined Aviva in 2001, has extensive experience of the UK business. She previously held a number of senior finance and actuarial roles.

Tulloch said: “These appointments are an important first step to bring greater energy, pace and commercial thinking to Aviva. Andy Briggs will be missed. Andy is a brilliant leader and a good friend.

“Aviva has benefited enormously from his extensive industry experience and his integrity and we wish him well for the future. I look forward to working with him during the transitionary period.”
