The COVID-19 pandemic has brought employee mental health into the spotlight once again. With many shifting to remote working environments and with limited physical interactions beyond their households, now more than ever employers need to ensure they are helping their employees look after their mental health. Zurich is one insurer that has taken steps, including Zurich Risk Advisor, to help employers and employees better understand the importance of mental health, as well as its risks and how best to respond to them.

Findings from GlobalData’s 2020 UK SME Insurance Survey indicate that 22% of SMEs believe supporting employees with their mental health and wellbeing is the most important employee benefit they can offer, second only to offering them financial security. With such a high proportion of SMEs already feeling they should be playing an active role in supporting their employees’ mental health and wellbeing, tools such as Zurich’s will clearly be welcomed.

Zurich Risk Advisor is an app that is free to all UK businesses – not just Zurich policyholders. The app helps businesses learn about their exposures to mental health risks and offers recommendations on how to respond. Such a tool will improve awareness among businesses as to how their employees’ mental health can be affected by the new normal and what steps can be taken to reduce the impact.

As government restrictions ease, some employees will feel apprehensive about what this means for their new working environment and how it will impact on their work/life balance. Tools such as Zurich Risk Advisor will allow companies to take a proactive approach to helping employees adjust to the new normal, whilst also creating opportunities for providers like Zurich to engage with potential new customers.
