US-based Howden Re has opened a new office in Dublin, marking its entry into Ireland as part of a wider push to expand across Europe.

The company said the new base is aimed at deepening its role in Ireland’s insurance and reinsurance sector and improving support for clients in what it described as a “fast-evolving” market.

Howden Re said that the country is the EU’s fourth-largest insurance market, with annual premiums exceeding €100bn.

Through the Dublin operation, Irish clients will be able to access Howden Re’s reinsurance, analytics and capital advisory capabilities via a team located in the country.

Howden Re International deputy CEO Sebastian Cook said: “By establishing an on-the-ground presence, Howden Re is building on the extensive work of our retail colleagues who have established a trusted and recognised brand across Ireland.”

Alongside the office launch, the company has appointed David Carpenter as director of Howden Re Ireland.

Carpenter, who will be based in Dublin, will oversee the local business and develop a team serving Irish insurers, managing general agents (MGAs) and captive insurers.

He has more than two decades of experience in reinsurance and broking across Dublin, London and wider international markets.

Before joining Howden Re, he was at McGill and Partners.

Carpenter said: “Our focus is to provide clear, practical reinsurance advise that helps clients connect capital to risk more effectively. Domestic and international insurers operating in this market, MGAs and captives deserve locally based reinsurance advice, backed by the best analytical and broking expertise in the market.”
