Ryan Specialty has named Stephen Stewart as CEO of its new Canadian holding company after completing a merger of local underwriting operations.
The US specialty insurer said that Stewart, currently president and CEO of Stewart Specialty Risk Underwriting, will take on the additional position at Ryan Specialty Canada, based in Toronto.

Commenting on his appointment, Stewart said: “Completing the amalgamation and establishing Ryan Specialty Canada Limited is an important milestone for our business. It formalises the structure needed to support long-term growth in Canada and positions our teams to better serve brokers and trading partners nationwide.”
The newly created entity combines the group’s Canadian managing general underwriting (MGU) businesses: Alive Risk, Global Special Risks, PERse (Power. Energy. Risk.), Ryan Transactional Risk, Stewart Specialty Risk Underwriting, Technical Risk Underwriters and Trident Marine Managers.
Alongside his expanded responsibilities, Stewart will continue running Stewart Specialty Risk Underwriting.
He will oversee the build-out of the Canadian platform while the company proceeds with the legal integration, which is being carried out across underwriting, operational and support teams to form a single structure.

By GlobalDataRyan Specialty said Stewart will guide the ongoing expansion of its Canadian operations while retaining the underwriting discipline and specialist approach associated with its existing units in the country.
The group added that the amalgamation completes the consolidation of its Canadian underwriting management activities under the new holding company.
Separately, the company noted that its underwriting arm, Ryan Specialty Underwriting Managers, launched an MGU in December 2025 aimed at public sector risk in the US.
Operating as Ryan Specialty Public Entity, the business provides casualty and auto physical damage cover for publicly owned, tax-funded organisations, offering both insurance and reinsurance options.
Its services are intended for a range of government-linked bodies including cities, counties, municipalities, school districts, special districts, state and local authorities, towns, state universities and villages.
