Commercial property insurer FM has unveiled the FM Intellium programme to address the risk landscape driven by AI and cloud computing advancements.

The programme aims to support clients managing data centres and power generation facilities.

The insurer is leveraging its experience in the data centre and power generation sectors to enhance its loss prevention engineering and research efforts.

This includes the formation of a virtual on-demand resource unit that allows subject matter experts to be deployed to address client matters globally.

FM’s methodology involves integration of data risk management with associated power and infrastructure projects.

This approach addresses engineering interdependencies, applicable to both existing operations and projects under construction.

With more than 25 years of expertise in data centre insurance, the company currently insures around 1,100 data centres, accounting for an insurable value of $250bn.

FM research operation areas include power supply, cooling systems and the use of lithium-ion battery technology, with scientific teams investigating various factors that affect data centre reliability.

The programme also encompasses solutions for sector-specific risks such as site selection, cooling and power systems, and equipment protection.

FM chief operating officer Randy Hodge said: “With the continuing migration to cloud computing and expansion of AI, data centres demand complete operational confidence. FM has the expertise to ensure resilience and prevent losses for even more clients in these crucial sectors. We see a significant opportunity to bring our research, engineering and loss prevention expertise to help clients and the broader industry as these technologies increase and evolve.”

In March, FM initiated the construction of the FM Science and Technology Centre, Europe, in Luxembourg.

This research facility will focus on risk mitigation strategies for clients and stakeholders across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
