Commercial property insurer FM, through its São Paulo-based subsidiary, FM Seguros, has secured a licence to operate as an insurer in Brazil.

The move marks an expansion for FM, which has been present in the Brazilian market through partnerships for nearly 40 years.

The authorisation allows FM Group, based in Johnston, Rhode Island, US, to enhance its engagement with Brazilian companies and brokers by providing direct access to its business model.

The shift towards operating as a direct insurer in Brazil will be implemented gradually.

FM Seguros looks to initiate its insurance services in 2026, coordinating with existing partners, brokers and clients to facilitate a smooth transition.

FM operations senior vice-president and Latin America operations manager Monica Yasutomi said: “We are excited to bring our philosophy of partnership and our capital, research and engineering expertise to Brazilian companies, helping them build more resilience and protect their businesses for the future.

“This is a natural and strategic step in our nearly half-century journey in Latin America. Brazil is a key market, and obtaining this licence reinforces our long-term commitment to our clients in the region.”

FM vice-president and client service manager Daniel Patavino Mazzi stated: “Our approach is unique. We act as partners to our client-owners to deeply understand the risks that can impact their business continuity.

“Working with business leaders as a local insurer in Brazil will allow us to apply our engineering expertise even more effectively, making risk management decisions that combine the best loss prevention with robust insurance protection for our clients.”

In May, the company launched the FM Intellium programme to address risks associated with advancements in AI and cloud computing, helping clients manage data centres and power generation facilities.
