Multinational insurance company AIA Group has opened its group headquarters in Hong Kong, following the completion of redevelopment of the old building.

The new building, at 1 Stubbs Road in Wan Chai, is AIA’s first urban campus in Hong Kong which is wholly owned and operated solely for AIA’s use.

The opening was marked by a ceremony on 27 May, attended by AIA Group chairman Edmund Tse, AIA Group CEO and president Lee Yuan Siong, and Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region acting financial secretary Michael Wong.

The redevelopment, which began in 2019, has transformed the building that had been operational for 50 years.

AIA Building was designed by Arquitectonica with Hip Hing as the building contractor and WSP as the project manager and engineering team.

It spans around 23,600m² across 22 floors and will house around 1,800 employees at full capacity and includes parking and service floors.

The headquarters has multiple features such as a continuous 80m atrium staircase, gym facilities, an indoor running track, and a multi-purpose sports hall.

Sustainability and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations have been key in the building’s redevelopment, as the building has achieved platinum ratings in LEED, WELL, and BEAM+ pre-certifications.

Among its eco-friendly features are 80 electric vehicle chargers, a biodiesel generator for self-sustaining power supply and rooftop solar panels.

Tse said: “The opening of the new AIA Building represents the start of another exceptional chapter in our history and is a testament to our enduring heritage, achievements in and commitment to Hong Kong.”

Siong added: “From the AIA Building, we will continue to drive AIA’s long-term growth and fulfil our Purpose to help people in Asia live Healthier, Longer, Better Lives.”
