A total of 44 deals worth $296.16m were announced in January 2020, compared to the 12-month average of 51 deals.

M&A was the leading category in the month in terms of volume with 39 deals which accounted for 88.6% of all deals.

In second place was venture financing with four deals, followed by private equity with one transactions, respectively accounting for 9.1% and 2.3% of overall deal activity in the country’s insurance industry during the month.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading deal category in the US insurance industry with total deals worth $159.7m, while private equity and venture financing deals totalled $86.46m and $50m, respectively.

The top five insurance industry deals accounted for 95.2% of the overall value during January 2020.

The combined value of the top five insurance deals stood at $282m, against the overall value of $296.16m recorded for the month.

The top five insurance industry deals of January 2020 tracked by GlobalData were:

1) Align Financial Holdings’ $150m acquisition of National Lloyds

2) The $50m venture financing of Clearcover by American Family Ventures, Cox Enterprises, IA Capital Group and OMERS Ventures

3) Hudson Structured Capital Management’s $50m private equity deal with Gracie Point Holdings

4) The $27m venture financing of Gabi Personal Insurance Agency by Mubadala Capital and Canvas

5) Independence American Insurance’s acquisition of Figo Pet Insurance for $5m.
