
The US insurance industry saw a drop of 17.3% in overall deal activity during December 2019, when compared with the last 12-month average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 43 deals worth $9.02bn were announced in December 2019, compared to the 12-month average of 52 deals.
M&A was the leading category in the month in terms of volume with 31 deals which accounted for 72.1% of all deals.
In second place was venture financing with 11 deals, followed by private equity with one transactions, respectively accounting for 25.6% and 2.3% of overall deal activity in the country’s insurance industry during the month.

By GlobalDataIn terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading deal category in the US insurance industry with total deals worth $8.27bn, while venture financing and private equity deals totalled $703.59m and $50m, respectively.

The top five insurance industry deals accounted for 99.2% of the overall value during December 2019.
The combined value of the top five insurance deals stood at $8.96bn, against the overall value of $9.02bn recorded for the month.

1) New York Life Insurance’s $6.3bn asset transaction with Cigna
2) The $1.25bn asset transaction with Voya Financial by Resolution Life Holdings
3) IA Financial Group’s $720m acquisition of IAS Parent Holdings
4) The $635m venture financing of Bright Health by Bessemer Venture Partners, Cross Creek Advisors, Declaration Partners, Flare Capital Partners, Greenspring Associates, Meritech Capital Partners, New Enterprise Associates, Redpoint Ventures and Town Hall Ventures
5) Leadenhall Capital Partners and Peloton Equity’s private equity deal with Friday Health Plans for $50m.
