North America’s insurance industry saw a rise of 51.5% in overall deal activity during Q4 2020, when compared to the four-quarter average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 103 deals worth $7.46bn were announced for the region during Q4 2020, against the last four-quarter average of 68 deals.

Of all the deal types, M&A saw most activity in Q4 2020 with 81, representing a 78.6% share for the region.

In second place was venture financing with 14 deals, followed by private equity deals with eight transactions, respectively capturing a 13.6% and 7.8% share of the overall deal activity for the quarter.

In terms of value of deals, M&A was the leading category in North America’s insurance industry with $4.62bn, while private equity and venture financing deals totalled $2.5bn and $343.49m, respectively.

North America insurance industry deals in Q4 2020: Top deals

The top five insurance deals accounted for 91.3% of the overall value during Q4 2020.

The combined value of the top five insurance deals stood at $6.81bn, against the overall value of $7.46bn recorded for the quarter.

The top five insurance industry deals of Q4 2020 tracked by GlobalData were:

1) Farmers Exchanges and Farmers Group’s $3.94bn acquisition of MetLife Auto & Home Insurance Agency

2) The $1.2bn private equity deal with Genworth MI Canada by Brookfield Business Partners

3) Onex Group and Onex Partners V’s $960m private equity deal with Digital Insurance

4) The $370m acquisition of American Access Casualty by Kemper

5) Brookfield Asset Management’s private equity deal with American Equity Investment Life Holding for $336.92m.
