Industries that can benefit from this coverage include petrol stations, automotive repair shops, camping sites, commercial premises and golf courses.

The STL insurance is designed to protect against third-party claims arising from environmental risks linked to storage tanks.

Coverage includes property damage, bodily injury, clean-up costs (both off-site and on-site), civil fines and penalties, as well as crisis management expenses.

For businesses in Canada, except in Quebec, STL is currently available via Markel Connect with minimum premiums beginning at C$500 ($356) for coverage limits of C$1m.

Markel Canada Environmental Liability product line leader, vice-president Sarah Martin said: “Our new STL product is a direct response to the evolving needs of Canadian businesses and brokers.

“We have designed this solution to be both robust and accessible, ensuring that clients with storage tank exposures – whether in manufacturing, retail or commercial real estate – can secure the protection they need quickly and confidently.”

In separate news, Markel Insurance has appointed Rohan Davies as managing director (MD) at its newly established London Market business, pending regulatory approval.

The appointment comes after last month’s announcement that Markel International will restructure from its previous two-division model – Wholesale and National Markets – into five separate business units: Asia-Pacific, Canada, Europe, London Market and the UK.

Davies will be responsible for leading around 350 staff members across three core product areas – Marine & Energy, PFR & Cyber and Specialty – based in London, and three additional teams in the US.

Davies brings more than two decades of experience in specialty insurance. He joined Markel International in 2008 as an energy underwriter in Singapore and most recently served as MD for Marine & Energy.
