US senator Anthony J. Portantino has introduced legislation in California that requires insurance policies to include fertility protection for patients undergoing cancer treatments and other diseases requiring aggressive treatments.

While most insurance policies and plans cover a wide variety of cancer treatments and follow-up procedures due to consequences and effects of treatment, such as reconstructive surgery, fertility preservations unfortunately is not included in those plans.

According to Portantino, who belongs to the Democratic party in the US, this omission forces many patients to forego or delay treatment as they grapple with these decisions.

Portantino said: “It just doesn’t seem right that anyone should have to choose between fighting cancer and his or her ability to have children.”

Elected on 8 November 8, 2016, Senator Portantino represents California’s 25th State Senate District.
