Matt James, who at present holds the positions of chief financial officer (CFO) and chief acquisition officer, will become CEO.

In his new capacity, Smith will continue to shape the company’s strategic direction and focus on talent development and partnership growth.

Trae Vaughan, currently managing director for Oakbridge’s largest region, will move into the role of president.

Smith commented: “Over the past several years, we have built a firm defined by trusted relationships, service without compromise, and a commitment to always doing what is right for our colleagues, clients and carrier partners.

“I am incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished so far and confident that Matt, Trae and our broader leadership group will build on our current momentum as Oakbridge enters this next phase of growth.”

James has overseen Oakbridge’s financial management, legal matters, and mergers and acquisitions activity since the company was founded.

His background includes executive experience at another insurance distribution operator backed by private equity, where he managed corporate finance and wider growth initiatives.

James said: “The vision and mission of Oakbridge remain unchanged. We are doubling down on what has made us successful: a broadly aligned employee-centric model that empowers both the current and next generation of talent. Together with Robbie, Trae and our executive team, we are well positioned to scale strategically while continuing to invest in our people and expand our capabilities.”

Vaughan has experience both as a producer and a leader within Oakbridge’s sales operations.

His background in the agency business has provided him with insights into independent brokerage channels.

In 2025, Oakbridge formed a partnership with Mississippi, US-based Alliance Ag Risk Management.

This collaboration expanded Oakbridge’s services to include agricultural and crop risk management for farmers and agribusinesses.
